The Straits Chinese
culture emerged with the creation of a new ethic group called
Peranakan. During the early days, numerous wealthy Chinese
traders married local Malay women along the Straits Region.
Not to mention, food became an important bond between them.
The Malay wives began to teach their Chinese husbands to enjoy
the aromatic taste of spices while their Chinese husbands
introduced pork, chicken and other vegetables to their wives
to include in their dishes they created. It is the harmony
in the kitchen that form the tight bond of the Peranakan community.
